How to install Extruded Solutions' Tailgate Seal with Taper Seal®

ITEMS REQUIRED: Scissors, clean rag and soap solution.

Extreme temperatures will result in poor adhesive performance. Apply only if air and surface temperature is between 55° - 105°F (13° - 40°C).
Avoid touching adhesive after peeling off red liner. Repositioning of seal should not be done more than 2 times and only 1 time if the temperature is above 80°F (13°C).

Kit contains Standard and Large Tailgate Seal with Taper Seal®

Clean area thoroughly with soap and water solution and wipe completely dry. Use alcohol pad to prep the tape application area and let dry. Wait until after Tailgate Seal is installed before applying very firm pressure, to secure adhesive bond. If necessary, Tailgate Seal can be removed and repositioned prior to applying very firm pressure. Pictures shown below are for the left sidewall and tailgate gap.

STEP 1: ATTACHING TO SIDEWALL USING LARGE TAILGATE SEAL

Start 1” below truck bed floor and attach Large Tailgate Seal to the rear corner edge of the left sidewall extension (FIG 1A). Applying light pressure to adhesive, flush seal to the side of bed floor and gradually curve up 2”. Continue straight up, applying light pressure to adhesive and stop when 6” from the rubber stop. Keeping adhesive off surface, mark the seal where it will be flush to bottom of rubber stop. Cut at a 45° angle (FIG 1B). Continue up to rubber stop and apply light pressure to adhesive. Close tailgate and inspect from the inside to see if there is light through the sidewall (FIG 1C). Open tailgate and make adjustments by removing seal and repositioning. Once seal is positioned apply very firm pressure (25lbs.) to secure adhesive bond. Duplicate for right sidewall.

STEP 2: ATTACHING TO TOP OF SIDEWALL USING LARGE TAILGATE SEAL

Do not remove adhesive liner. Take roll of seal and flush 45° angle to the top of rubber stop (FIG 1B) and determine where adhesive will be adhered to based on FIG 1B, 2A and 2B. Put on protective glove and apply enclosed adhesion promoter to where the adhesive where be adhered to. Allow 90 seconds to dry. Remove adhesive liner and attach. NOTE: The adhesion promote will create an instant bond so do not attempt to remove or reposition. When nearing the top of sidewall extension, gradually begin rotating seal 90° degrees counter-clockwise, as you proceed up. When even with the top of bedrail, the top of seal should be facing inward and the taped side of seal should be flush with the sidewall of the bedrail (FIG 2C). Cut excess seal. Once seal is positioned apply very firm pressure (25lbs.), especially at rotation points, to secure adhesive bond. Duplicate for right sidewall.

STEP 3: ATTACHING TO SIDE OF TAILGATE USING STANDARD TAILGATE SEAL

Cut a 3.125” piece of Standard Tailgate Seal. Remove liner and attach to the side of tailgate at the top, bulb side facing upwards (FIG 3A). Apply light pressure to adhesive. Close tailgate. If you see light through the sidewall, make adjustments by removing seal and repositioning. NOTE: For larger gaps substitute Standard seal with Large seal and apply either bulb side up or bulb side down. Once seal is positioned apply very firm pressure (25lbs.) to secure adhesive bond. Duplicate for right sidewall.

STEP 4: ATTACHING TO TAILGATE BOTTOM GAP USING STANDARD TAILGATE SEAL
Most often bulb side is up for Tundra (FIG 1A and 4B).

To evaluate the best positioning for the tailgate gap, cut a 1” (2.5cm) test piece and align the top of bulb with the truck bed floor, attaching adhesive underneath the lip of the truck bed floor liner. Stand to the side of truck and raise tailgate until bulb makes contact with tailgate.
NOTE: Compression and/or slight rolling of the bulb is okay, however, if the bulb rolls downwards too much as the tailgate is closing and you can see the tape, then seal has rolled too much. This can cause added stress on the adhesive and possible separation.

If you see that the bulb is rolling too much then invert 1” test piece so that bulb side is down. Raise tailgate and make sure no light is visible through the 1” piece. Adjust 1” piece higher or lower to seal out the light. After determining if the bulb should be up or down and how high or low, remove 1” piece and pick up one end of the continuous seal.

Start at either end, peel back a section of liner and flush end of Standard seal to Large seal on the sidewall (FIG 1A). Attach in sections and apply light pressure to adhesive. Flush to Large seal on the other sidewall and cut to fit. Apply very firm pressure (25lbs.) to secure adhesive bond.
STEP 5
After Tailgate Seal with Taper Seal® is in place, apply very firm pressure (25lbs.) to secure the entire adhesive bond. Leave tailgate open for 30 minutes. If the air temperature will fall below 50°F (10°C) within the next 24 hours or, if applied to a surface other than paint, such as plastic or a spray on bed liner, then leave tailgate open for 24 hours.
