How to install Extruded Solutions' Tailgate Seal with Taper Seal®
ITEMS REQUIRED: Scissors, clean rag and soap solution.
Extreme temperatures will result in poor adhesive performance. Apply only if air and surface temperature is between 55° - 105°F (13° - 40°C). Avoid touching adhesive after peeling off red liner. Repositioning of seal should not be done more than 2 times and only 1 time if the temperature is above 80°F (13°C).

Repositioning of seal should not be done more than 2 times and only once if the temperature is above 80°F (27°C).
STEP 1
Clean area thoroughly with soap and water solution and wipe completely dry. Use IPA pads to prep the tape application area and let dry.
IMPORTANT: Wait until after each step is complete before applying very firm pressure (25 lbs.) to secure adhesive bond.
NOTE: Pictures shown are for the left side only.
STEP 2: ATTACHING TO SIDEWALLS
Start 1” (2.5cm) below truck bed floor (FIG 2) and attach seal to the rear corner edge of the left sidewall extension (FIG 2A). Apply light pressure to adhesive and continue up. When nearing top of sidewall, gradually rotate seal 90° counter clockwise so that bulb is facing inward and the taped side of seal is flush with the sidewall at the top (FIG 2C and 2D). Cut excess seal. Close tailgate. If you see light through the sidewall, make adjustments by removing seal and repositioning. Do not apply firm pressure to adhesive. Duplicate for right side.
STEP 3: ATTACHING 2.75" (6.98cm) PIECE TO SIDE OF TAILGATE USING LARGE TAILGATE SEAL
Cut a 2.75” (6.98 cm) piece of Large Tailgate Seal. Remove liner and attach to the side of tailgate at the top, bulb side facing upwards (FIG 3A and 3B). Apply light pressure to adhesive. Close tailgate. If you see light through the sidewall, make adjustments by removing seal and repositioning. NOTE: For smaller gaps substitute Large seal with Standard seal and apply either bulb side up or bulb side down. Do not apply firm pressure to adhesive. Duplicate for right side.
STEP 4:
Close tailgate. If there is still light, then cut pieces of seal as needed and attach to sidewalls and/or tailgate. Do not attach adhesive to rubber part of seal. After Tailgate Seal with Taper Seal® is in place, apply very firm pressure (25 lbs.) to secure the adhesive bond for the sidewalls and side of tailgate.
STEP 5: ATTACHING STANDARD SEAL TO TAILGATE GAP
Note: More often bulb side is up for 2023 and newer Colorado and Canyon
To evaluate the best positioning for the tailgate gap, cut a 1” (2.5cm) test piece and align the top of bulb with lower ridge of the truck bed floor and adhere. Stand to the side of truck and raise tailgate until the bulb makes contact with tailgate. If the bulb rolls downwards just before closing tailgate, so that you can see the tape, then seal has rolled and compressed too much. This can cause added stress to the adhesive and possible separation.
If compressing too much, then invert 1” test piece so that bulb side is down. Raise tailgate and make sure no light is visible through the 1” piece. Adjust 1” piece higher or lower in the gap, as needed, to block the light. After determining if bulb should be up or down and how high or low, remove 1” piece and pick up one end of the continuous seal.
BEGIN: Cut a 45 degree angle in seal. Starting on the left side remove a section of liner and flush to seal on the sidewall (FIG 2 and 5A). Angle 45 degrees down from sidewall, approximately 1.75”, until horizontal with the lower ridge of truck bed floor. The flat top of seal should be flush with the bottom of truck bed floor lip. Attach in sections, apply light pressure to adhesive should you need to reposition. Stop when 12” from the right sidewall. Keeping adhesive off surface determine where seal will be flush with the seal on the sidewall. Cut seal at a 45 degree angle. Continue attaching. When approximately 1.75” from seal on the sidewall then angle up 45 degree, and flush to seal on the sidewall. Apply very firm pressure (25 lbs.) to secure adhesive bond.
STEP 6
After Tailgate Seal is in place, apply very firm pressure (25 lbs.) to secure the entire adhesive bond. Leave tailgate open for 30 minutes. If the air temperature will fall below 50°F (10°C) within the next 24 hours or, if applying to a surface other than paint, such as plastic or a spray-on bed liner, then leave tailgate open for 24 hours.
