How to install Extruded Solutions' Tailgate Seal with Taper Seal®

ITEMS REQUIRED: Scissors, clean rag and soap solution.

Extreme temperatures will result in poor adhesive performance. Apply only if air and surface temperature is between 55° - 105°F (13° - 40°C).
Avoid touching adhesive after peeling off red liner. Repositioning of seal should not be done more than 2 times and only 1 time if the temperature is above 80°F (13°C).

ITEMS REQUIRED: Scissors, clean rag and soap solution.

Extreme temperatures will result in poor adhesive performance. Apply only if the air and surface temperature is between 55° - 105°F (13° - 40°C). Avoid touching adhesive after peeling off red liner. Repositioning of seal should not be done more than 2 times and only once if the temperature is above 80°F (27°C).

NOTE: If adhesive is being applied to a surface other than paint, then apply enclosed Adhesion Promoter, with protective glove, after determining position and prior to attaching seal. Use for STEPS 2, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10. NOTE: The adhesion promote will create an instant bond so do not attempt to remove or reposition.

Clean area thoroughly with soap and water solution and wipe completely dry. Use alcohol pads to prep the tape application area and let dry. Wait until after Tailgate Seal is installed, before applying very firm pressure (25lbs.), to secure adhesive bond. If necessary, Tailgate Seal can be removed and repositioned prior to applying very firm pressure (25lbs.). Pictures shown are for the left sidewall and tailgate bottom gap.

STEP 1: ATTACHING TO SIDEWALL USING LARGE TAILGATE SEAL

Start 1” below truck bed floor and attach Large Tailgate Seal to the rear corner edge of the left sidewall extension (FIG 1A, 1B and 1C) and apply light pressure to adhesive. Continue straight up, applying light pressure to adhesive and stop when 6” from the rubber stop. Keeping adhesive off surface, mark the seal where it will be flush to bottom of rubber stop. Cut at a 45° angle (FIG 1B). Continue up to rubber stop and apply light pressure to adhesive.

Close tailgate and inspect from the inside to see if there is light through the sidewall. Open tailgate and make adjustments by removing seal and repositioning. Once seal is positioned apply very firm pressure (25lbs.) to secure adhesive bond. Duplicate for right sidewall.

STEP 2: ATTACHING TO TOP OF SIDEWALL USING STANDARD TAILGATE SEAL

Cut a 2.5" (6.35cm) piece of Standard Tailgate Seal. Before removing liner, determine positions so that bottom of seal is flushe with rubber stop and bulb is facing forward (FIG 2A, 2B and 2C). Apply Adhesion Promoter to the non-painted surface.

NOTE: The adhesion promote will create an instant bond so do not attempt to remove or reposition. Remove liner and attach. Apply very firm pressure (25 lbs.) to adhesive. Duplicate for right sidewall.

STEP 3: ATTACHING TO SIDE OF TAILGATE USING STANDARD TAILGATE SEAL FOR LEFT SIDE AND LARGE TAILGATE SEAL FOR RIGHT SIDE

Cut a 2.25" (5.7cm) piece of Standard Tailgate Seal. Attach to the left side of tailgate and flush to the inside top of tailgate, bulb side facing up (FIG 3A and 3B). Apply light pressure. Check that bottom of seal does not interfere with rubber stop by lifting tailgate, but not closing and inspecting from the inside (FIG 3C). Adjust seal as necessary.

NOTE: For larger gaps substitute Standard seal with Large seal. Apply very firm pressure (25 lbs.) to adhesive. Duplicate for right side except use Large Tailgate Seal not Standard Tailgate Seal. Apply very firm pressure (25 lbs.) to adhesive.

STEP 4: ATTACHING TO TAILGATE BOTTOM GAP USING STANDARD TAILGATE SEAL

Most often bulb side is up for FORD (FIG 4).

POSSIBLE EXCEPTION: When a spray on liner has been applied to the gap below the truck bed floor then sometimes depending on the thickness of the liner, the bulb will need to be inverted down. Read the following to determine: or view 1 minute video on TailgateSeal.com

To evaluate the best positioning for the tailgate bottom gap, cut a 1” (2.5cm) test piece and align the top of bulb with the truck bed floor, attaching adhesive underneath the lip of the truck bed floor extension. Stand to the side of truck and raise tailgate until bulb makes contact with the tailgate.

NOTE: Compression and/or slight rolling of the bulb is okay, however, if the bulb rolls downwards too much, as the tailgate is closing and you can see the tape, then seal has rolled too much. This can cause added stress on the adhesive and possible separation.

If you see that the bulb is rolling too much then invert 1” test piece so that bulb side is down. Close tailgate and make sure no light is visible through the 1” piece. If needed, adjust 1” piece higher or lower to seal out the light. After determining if the bulb should be up or down and how high or low, remove 1” piece and pick up one end of the Standard Tailgate Seal.

Start at either end, peel back a section of liner and flush end of Standard seal to Large seal on the sidewall (FIG 4A). Attach in sections and apply light pressure to adhesive. Stop when 6" (15.3cm) from opposite end. Keeping adhesive off surface, cut seal where it will be flush with the seal on the sidewall. Apply very firm pressure (25lbs.) to secure adhesive bond.

STEP 5: ATTACHING STANDARD TAILGATE SEAL TO BOTTOM LEFT OF AUXILIARY GATE

Cut a 5.500” piece of Standard Tailgate Seal. Determine position, before attaching seal, as shown in FIG 5A, 5B and 5C. Before removing liner and attaching seal, apply Adhesion Promoter to the non-painted surface.

NOTE: The adhesion promote will create an instant bond so do not attempt to remove or reposition. Apply very firm pressure (25 lbs.) to adhesive.

STEP 6: ATTACHING LARGE TAILGATE SEAL TO TOP LEFT SIDE OF AUXILIARY GATE

Cut a 2.250” piece of Large Tailgate Seal and attach as shown in Fig 6

STEP 7: ATTACHING RIBBED SEAL TO TOP LEFT OF AUXILIARY GATE

Cut a 4.750” piece of Ribbed Seal. Determine position, before attaching seal, as shown in FIG 6, 7A and 7B. Before removing liner and attaching seal, apply Adhesion Promoter to the non-painted surface.

NOTE: The adhesion promote will create an instant bond so do not attempt to remove or reposition. Apply very firm pressure (25 lbs.) to adhesive.

STEP 8: ATTACHING STANDARD TAILGATE SEAL TO BOTTOM RIGHT OF AUXILIARY GATE

Cut a 6.500” piece of Standard Tailgate Seal. Determine position, before attaching seal, as shown in FIG 8A, 8B and 8C. Before removing liner and attaching seal, apply Adhesion Promoter to the non-painted surface.

NOTE: The adhesion promote will create an instant bond so do not attempt to remove or reposition. Apply very firm pressure (25 lbs.) to adhesive.

STEP 9: ATTACHING STANDARD TAILGATE SEAL TO TOP RIGHT SIDE OF MAIN TAILGATE

Cut a 2.500” piece of Standard Tailgate Seal. Determine position, before attaching seal, as shown in FIG 9A and 9B. Before removing liner and attaching seal, apply Adhesion Promoter to the non-painted surface. NOTE: The adhesion promote will create an instant bond so do not attempt to remove or reposition. Apply very firm pressure (25 lbs.) to adhesive.
STEP 10: ATTACHING RIBBED SEAL TO TOP RIGHT SIDE OF AUXILIARY GATE

Cut a 4.750” piece of Ribbed Seal. Determine position, before attaching seal, as shown in FIG 10A and 10B. Before removing liner and attaching seal, apply Adhesion Promoter to the non-painted surface. NOTE: The adhesion promote will create an instant bond so do not attempt to remove or reposition. Apply very firm pressure (25 lbs.) to adhesive.
STEP 11: ATTACHING LARGE TAILGATE SEAL TO TOP RIGHT SIDE OF AUXILIARY GATE

Cut a 2.250” piece of Large Tailgate Seal and attach as shown in Fig 11.

STEP 12

After Tailgate Seal is in place, apply very firm pressure (25lbs.) to secure the entire adhesive bond. Leave tailgate open for 60 minutes. If the air temperature will fall below 50°F (10°C) within the next 24 hours or, if applied to a surface other than paint, such as plastic or a spray on bed liner, then leave tailgate open for 24 hours
